Abstract

The study was purposed for the understanding of the levels of life-events, anger, and depression of the middle-aged housewives, and for the close examination of their correlations to one another, thereby, to utilize for basic data of the middle-aged housewives¢¥ care for stress. A survey of this study was practiced during the period of Oct. 12, 1998 to 31 of the same month to the 223 middle-aged housewives under the age of 59, whose last children were avove the grade of junior high schools, by using organized questionaire. The questionaire contained 7 questions of general characteristics, 40 main factors for stress, 10 of anger, and 21 of depression. As to filling up of the questionaire. special care was paid to let each subject fill the paper by herself before collecting the paper. As a method of the ananlysis of questionaire, the percentage and frequency by SPSS PC+ was used for the general characteristics of the subject. For the correlation of general characteristics with the life-events, anger, and depression, Pearson correlation coeffcient was adopted.

Results of the study are as follows :
1. It was shown that the middel-aged housewives experienced 16.9 of 40 life-enents. Of all the life-events, the most great numbers of housewives experienced the financial problems, then followed in the order of family problems, health, jobs, and personal losses. As to the level of life-enents, it showed that it has some connection with the form and the numbers of the family.
2. With the anger level, minimun 0 to maxnum 40, the average level for anger of
the middle-aged housewives showed 18.69 and also showed that the existence(or nonexistence) of their spouses effected on the level of anger.
3. With the depression level, from the mininum o to the maxmum 63, the average depression level of the middle-aged housewives indicated 12.89, and showed 37.7%, of normal level, 29.1% of light depression, 23.3% of heavy depression, and 9.9% of serious depression. It also showed that the depression level was relevant to her academic carreer and the existence (or nonexistence) of their spouses.
4. It was found that there was correlation between life-events and anger in the middle-aged housewives and so was the life-event and the depression, and so was also with anger and depression.

In regard to the results above mentioned. this study defined the necessity of development of the programs for the promotion of middle-aged housewives¢¥ mental health by examining the relationship between life-events they had experienced and their mental health. With this study for a basis, we propose that first, for each separate family a periodic comparative study is needed for the housewives¢¥ life-events, and the state of the mental health. Second, we need to develop and applicate the programs that can promote the mental health of the middle-aged housewives, so that we may study the examinations of its effects.
